City of Wanfried

The town of Wanfried is the former final port of the Weser-Werra shipping industry. Even today, numerous magnificent and richly decorated half-timbered buildings bear witness to this era of Wanfried's history. As a member of the German Half-Timbered Road - regional route "From the Harz Mountains to the Thuringian Forest", interested visitors are invited to see this unique half-timbered backdrop for themselves.

Wanfried is located in the heart of Germany, in the middle of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park and can be reached by road from all directions since the opening of the border. Water hikers can reach Wanfried by boat, canoe or kayak on the Werra. Cyclists can reach Wanfried via the Werratal cycle path, the Iron Curtain Trail (long-distance cycle path Euro Velo Route 13) and the Hessen cycle path R 5. Wanfried can be explored on foot via the Auscher Blick circular hiking trail, the Werra-Burgen-Steig X5 H (in Hesse and Lower Saxony) and X5 (in Thuringia) and the premium hiking trails P5, P6 and P12, which have been awarded the German Hiking Seal.
